Scott Crowley Dies

Scott J. Crowley
June 16, 1967 - September 20, 1998
Scott J. Crowley 6/16/1967-9/20/1998
This past September, the Epilepsy Foundation lost a very good friend, Scott Crowley. Many of you knew Scott from his participation in our social activities, fund raising events, and support groups. Scott's seizures were not well controlled and he had other health concerns, but his sudden passing at age 31 was unexpected and came as a shock to all of us.

Scott was an avid golfer and bowler. He was very social, with an engaging personality. Whether you knew Scott well, or hardly knew him, you were subjected to incessant teasing.

More than anything, he loved, as he always put it, giving people a hard time. He was a big sports fan, especially of the San Francisco 49er football team. It was impossible not to think of Scott during the recent playoffs. He would have given all Packer fans a hard time, especially because a missed fumble call cost Green Bay the game.

Seizures gave Scott his hard time in life. They cost him friends, cost him jobs, caused difficulty in school and in relationships. In his short life, he had so many seizures that he stopped being embarrassed, stopped worrying what anyone thought. He became a spokesperson for people with epilepsy and volunteered his time to join us for panel presentations for many different audiences. More than once, Scott had a seizure in front of an audience, while presenting.

Scott's untimely passing reminds us of the work we have left to do in the epilepsy community. We are here, our mission statement says, to enhance the quality of life for people and families affected by seizures. You don't have to look hard to find ways in which seizures can change the circumstances of one's life. We must continue to look for a cure and for effective treatments, we must continue to educate both patients and the public, and we must continue to provide opportunities that connect people with the communities in which they live.

Through the generosity of the Crowley family and their friends, a memorial fund has been established in Scott's name. The fund will be used for social and recreational programs for adults, and to provide financial assistance to low income clients.
