Health Care 2000!

Health care is an issue that has dominated the public agenda in the 1900s, but the public concern about the issue has hardly diminished. Whether it is the cost of health care, the complexity of health insurance or the ability of people with modest means to get good care, the debate rages on.

That is why the Celebrate 2000 partners – including The Capital Times – decided to host a town meeting on the future of health care. The session – "Health Care and You in the Millenium," – will be held Friday, May 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Bolz Auditorium at Meriter Hospital's McConnell Hall on South Brooks Street.

Dave Zweifel, editor of The Capital Times, will open the evening with a brief overview of the issue. Jon Friesch, research analyst for Madison Newspapers, Inc., will present the results of a specially commissioned survey of Madison area residents on their attitudes toward health care in southern Wisconsin. Then Tom Still, associate editor of the Wisconsin State Journal, will moderate a panel composed of U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, health economist Ralph Andreano, Meriter Hospital CEO Terri Potter, Dean Clinic pediatric neurologist Dr. Mary Domhlski, and Chris Queram, CEO of The Alliance. The audience will be brought into the discussion.

WHA-TV's "Weekend" program will broadcast part of the show from the town meeting that night.

Celebrate 2000 is a year-long project of The Capital Times and Wisconsin State Journal in partnership with Meriter Hospital, Firstarbank, Ameritech, and Madison Gas and Electric, as well as 10 other community sponsors.
